The History and Culture of Hellenism in Asia Minor

WELCOME TO THE HELLENIC ASIA MINOR HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL SOCIETY

The Hellenic Asia Minor Historical and Cultural Society has as its principal mission to promote understanding of the Hellenic civilization, and culture as well as Orthodox Christianity that flourished for 3,000 years in Asia Minor and in Constantinople. Asia Minor is part of modern Turkey, but until the beginning of the 20th century it was home to a flourishing Greek culture. It is that culture and civilization, that started in the pre-historic years and continued through ancient times, the early Christian Church, the Byzantine times and the modern era when the Greek community flourished in that part of the world.

After the 1924 exchange of populations, no Greek Orthodox population remained in Asia Minor. Constantinople retained its Greek community under the treaty of Lausanne, but even that community has shrunk over the years. We intend explore the remnants of Hellenic culture and civilization as they exist today in the portions of Asia Minor and the present Greek Orthodox community of Constantinople.

THE MISSION

What do we intend to accomplish:

  • Foster academic research on relevant topic
  • Encourage and organize cultural activities on the subject
  • Explore ways to create an online presence of Asia Minor culture that will excite younger generations
  • Create a digital and possibly physical library on Asia Minor
  • Create a collection of items brought by descendants of refugees in the US
  • Organize pilgrimages to Constantinople and Asia Minor
